(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC volleyball snapped its four match skid with a 3-1 WAC victory over UTRGV on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center behind a trio of 'Roos reaching double figure kills.
Jessica Hendin led the squad, tallying 16 kills, hitting .268 with six digs and two blocks, while Madison Mosier hit .333 with 14 kills. Sydney Crimmins was the final Kangaroo in double figures, notching 11 kills, with a .458 hitting percentage, six digs and three blocks and Meagan Kerns narrowly missed becoming the fourth 'Roo in double figures with nine kills, four digs and two blocks.
The win pushes the 'Roos over .500 at 12-11 overall and 5-6 in WAC play, while UTRGV falls to 9-16 on the season and 2-8 in the conference.
In the opening set, UMKC broke a 14-14 tie midway through with back-to-back kills from Crimmins and Kerns, before a UTRGV error stretched the lead to a set-high five at 22-17. The Vaqueros would close the gap to as little as three, but a Mosier kill put the set away, 25-21.
After UTRGV tied the set at 1-1 with a 25-23 second set victory, the 'Roos quickly regained the lead in set three with a 25-21 win. The Vaqueros led early in the set until a 3-0 run by the 'Roos, that included an ace from Taryn Miller and a kill from Crimmins, gave UMKC its first lead at 16-15. UMKC would never trail in the set again and would extend its lead to as many as four three times, including the final score when Mosier again ended the set off a kill.
In the final set, UTRGV went ahead 2-0, but seven of the next nine points went to the 'Roos with Mosier tallying a pair of put-aways during the stretch. UTRGV would hang close as UMKC was never able to gain more than a three point advantage until stretching the lead to 20-16 after a Crimmins kill. UTRGV once more closed the deficit to two, but once again Mosier ended the set, this time ending the match as well with the final point of the night for the 25-21 victory.
Setting up the offense, Kaylyn Brandt had a team-best 30 assists and eight digs, while Nicole Wemhoff added 19 assists, three aces and nine digs.
Miller, meanwhile, led Kansas City with 18 digs and added three assists and two of the team's five aces.
The Blue & Gold will wrap-up regular season home play on Friday when they welcome in Chicago State on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.
