(Seattle, Wash.) – Grace Mitchell finished with 16 points, her third straight game in double figures, on 8-of-11 shooting with six rebounds, a career-high three steals and two assists, but the effort was not enough as the Missouri-Kansas City women's basketball team fell 60-46 to Seattle U on Saturday night at the Connolly Center.
“I have the mentality that I need to step up, especially now that we've reached conference play,” Mitchell said. “We want to turn this season around and we are putting in the effort to do it. Tonight, we executed some plays better, but we need to move forward and work on the things we can control like turnovers and our rebounding effort. Once we get that mindset locked in, the 'I'm not losing this game' mentality, we will win some games.”
With the loss, UMKC falls to 3-16 on the season and 1-3 in WAC play, while the Redhawks improve to 6-14 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
“We have to do a better job of adapting to the second game of these road trips,” Head Coach Marsha Frese said. “The tempo in the first half wasn't in our favor after a tight game Thursday, but it something our young kids will learn and we will improve on as we get deeper into conference play.”
The 'Roos started out hot in the first half, taking an 8-4 lead after Mitchell connected on three straight Kangaroo baskets.
Seattle scratched back to tie the score at 11-11, but back-to-back jumpers from Samantha Waldron and Taylor Leathers gave UMKC a four point edge seven minutes into the contest.
The 'Roos would maintain their four point cushion at 17-13, but the Redhawks closed out the half on a 23-6 run to take a 36-23 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, UMKC quickly narrowed the gap to five, scoring the first eight points, including the first six by Mitchell, and holding the Redhawks without a point for the first 6:40 of the half.
SU pushed the lead back to nine, but UMKC once again cut the lead to five after Mitchell and Waldron finished back-to-back layups.
After Seattle once again stretched the lead to double digits, the 'Roos had one final rally in them, cutting the lead back to five at 50-45 after Calli White buried a three from the top of the key and Law added a layup and a free throw, but Kansas City was unable to get any closer as the Redhawks went on a 10-1 run over the final three minutes to come away with the victory.
Waldron added 11 points, four assists, two rebounds a block and a steal in the effort, while Law grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, to go with five points and two blocks.
Defensively, UMKC held the Redhawks to just 34.3 percent shooting, including 18.2 percent from long range.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they return to Kansas City to take on Grand Canyon in a WAC contest at 7 p.m. in the Swinney Recreation Center.
