
UMKC Goes 2-0 On Day Two Of Cluster Play

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC women's tennis team (9-12, 5-2) picked up a pair of Summit League victories on Friday at The Plaza Tennis Center, downing Western Illinois (1-13, 0-3) 7-0 in the morning before taking down South Dakota State (2-9, 0-2) by an identical 7-0 score in the afternoon. The nine wins by the 'Roos this season are the second most in school history, trailing only the 10 wins from last season.
Junior Jillian Yakominich and sophomore Laura Bouet each registered their 14th and 15th wins of the season, the second most in school-history, while their 33 career wins are tied atop the UMKC record book. Yakominich picked up her first win of the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over the Leatherneck's Melissa Kaufmann, while Bouet took down Jill Furlong, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 line. In the match with the Jackrabbits, Yakominich defeated Megan McDougal 6-3, 6-1 from the No. 5 position and Bouet registered a 6-0, 6-3 win over Brooke Henry, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.
In the squad's other singles matches against WIU, sophomore Eva Dalvai took down Marcela Brandao, 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 at No. 1, while senior Chelsea Horner beat Amy Unzicker, 7-6 (1-0), 6-2 from the No. 3 position. At No. 4, sophomore Suzan Lisenby recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win over Claire Griffin, while freshman Gabriela Pintos won by default at No. 6 as Western Illinois had no No. 6 player.
In the singles matches against SDSU, Dalvai was again victorious at the No. 1 spot, downing Jenny Blackburne, 6-1, 6-0, while Horner won 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 at No. 3 over Bryna Nasenbeny. Suzan Lisenby, meanwhile, recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Natalia Medina and Pintos won over Katie Elifson, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
In doubles play, Bouet and Lisenby registered their 14th and 15th wins of the season, extending their school record. Against WIU, the duo teamed to defeat Unzicker and Griffin, 8-3 at No. 2 before beating SDSU's Bethany Goeden and Bryna Nasenbeny, 7-2, ret.
Horner and Dalvai, meanwhile, won over Brandao and Furlong, 8-6 and Henry and Blackburne, 8-3 with both wins coming at the No. 1 line. The wins were the 27th and 28th of Horner's career, extending her school record.
From the No. 3 line, Pintos and Yakominich won by default over Western Illinois before beating McDougal and Medina, 8-3 in the late match.
The 'Roos will conclude second cluster play tomorrow when they face Oakland at 2 p.m.
