
UMKC Picks Up Wins Over Fairfield, South Dakota On Day Two Of Tournament

Greeley, Colo. -- The UMKC volleyball team (3-5) picked up a pair of wins on Saturday at the Hampton Inn & Suites Northern Colorado Volleyball Classic, beating Fairfield (1-6) and South Dakota (2-7) each, 3-0. Ella Meier led the 'Roos on the day, as the sophomore setter recorded back-to-back career-highs in assists, notching 28 against Fairfield and 30 against South Dakota.
In the first match, UMKC took the first set 25-18, using an 8-2 run with the score tied at 10 to gain a six point advantage. The 'Roos would extend their lead to as many as eight before ending the set on a Fairfield attack error.
The 'Roos took the second set 25-18, this time closing out the set on an 8-1 run that featured three kills from Kelsey Knoche and two from Elizabeth Beck.
In the third set, UMKC closed out the match with another 25-18 set win. The 'Roos again used a late run to secure the set, this time closing it out on a 9-2 run that was highlighted by three more kills from Knoche.
In the match, Knoche finished with a team-high 14 kills, while Elizabeth Beck notched 13. As a team, the 'Roos registered a season-high 15 blocks, led by eight from Christiana McQuin and seven from Meier.
In the second match, the 'Roos took the early 1-0 lead, downing the Coyotes 25-18. UMKC again used a late run, closing out the set on a 7-0 run that featured two kills from freshman Chloe Jarema.
In the second set, the 'Roos jumped out to an early 13-8 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-14. Meier capped the set off for UMKC, ending it with a service ace.
The 'Roos evened their record in the tournament with a 25-19 win in the third set. The Coyotes hung tight early in the match, but UMKC ended the set on a 6-2 run to clinch a third place finish in the tournament.
In the match, Beck led the squad with 11 kills, while junior Nicole Kerkman registered 11 digs.
For the tournament, Beck registered a team-high 52 kills, while hitting .308 to garner all-tournament honors.
The Blue and Gold will be back in action again on Tuesday when they welcome in Drake to the Swinney Recreation Center for the home opener at 7 p.m.
