Kangaroos Face Vikings On Friday In Women's Soccer Action

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC women's soccer team heads to Ohio for a pair of matches over Labor Day weekend. The Kangaroos will take on Cleveland State on Friday night at 6 p.m. and face Youngstown State on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
UMKC is coming off of a 2-0 loss at South Dakota on Aug. 27. So far this season the Kangaroos are 0-2.
The Kangaroos went 1-17-1 in their inaugural season last year. UMKC landed its only victory last season against Southern Utah, 2-0, on Oct. 16.
Head coach Anita Rodriguez is back for her second season and brings with her 11 letterwinners from last season, all of who saw lots of action. The Kangaroos also welcome eight newcomers to the 2010 squad, seven freshman and one transfer.
Scouting the Opponent
So far this season, Cleveland State is 2-1-2, just coming off of a 2-2 double overtime tie to Kent State. The Vikings two wins this season have come against Marshall and Gannon. Last season, Cleveland State finished 3-14-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Horizon League. Head coach Derrek Falor is in his fifth season with the Vikings. This will be the first match up between the Kangaroos and the Vikings.
Getting More Looks
Although the Kangaroos are 0-2 on the season, they are already more offensive minded than last year. Two games in to their inaugural season, the `Roos only posted eight shots with four of them on frame. This season against Valparaiso and South Dakota, UMKC managed 28 shots, while placing 15 of them on goal.
UMKC Suffers Shutout At South Dakota
The UMKC women's soccer team fell 2-0 at South Dakota on Aug. 27. In the defeat, sophomore Jami Finnell recorded eight saves.
The Kangaroos would have many chances to score, posting 20 shots and placing 11 of them on frame. Ashley Gann led the `Roos with five shots, while Meagan Malloy took four and Zaina Mayer and Taylor Bare each had three.

Home of the Kangaroos
The Stanley H. Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field serves as the official home of the Kangaroos and provides student-athletes, students and community groups with one of the top soccer facilities in The Summit League and the Midwest. The $9 million dollar addition adds to the growing residential feel of the UMKC campus.
DSSRF provides seating for 850 fans and a separate addition hosts locker rooms for men's and women's soccer, softball and track & field, as well as offices for the respective coaching staffs and concession areas.
UMKC officially dedicated Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 prior to the men's soccer game against Western Illinois.
