Des Moines, Iowa -- The UMKC men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 road contest at Drake on Wednesday night at Cownie Stadium. Senior John Bayron scored a pair of goals in a 30-minute span to give the 'Roos the 2-1 lead, but the Bulldogs scored twice in the final 30 minutes of the contest to claim the victory.
Drake, which entered the contest with a three-game scoreless drought, scored first in the 14th minute on an unassisted strike by Hunter Kennedy. Kennedy beat UMKC goalkeeper Ken Cooper with a shot from the middle of the box into the lower right corner.
Sosa evened the contest at one apiece with an unassisted goal of his own in the 31st minute. The midfielder found the back of the net on a free kick, where he curved the ball into the lower right corner of the net past Jordan Kadlec.
After going into the break deadlocked at one, Sosa put UMKC on top with his second goal of the game in the 61st minute. Sosa collected the ball on a corner kick from fellow Luke Harman before firing a shot past the DU goalkeeper.
The 'Roo advantage was short lived, however, as Drake answered with a goal at the 61:22 mark. The Bulldogs' Michael Noonan intercepted a pass in the box and sent the shot past Cooper to even the tally at two. Drake then notched the game-winner in the 80th minute on a Thomas Ostrander strike. Charles Schwartz sent a header just to the right of the box where Ostrander sent the ball into the net with a half bicycle shot.
Drake finished with a 23-17 advantage in shots and a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also had 15 corner kicks compared to just three for UMKC.
Cooper made seven saves in goal for the 'Roos in the defeat, while Kadlec had five saves for Drake in the victory.
UMKC (2-2-1) will return to Kansas City on Saturday when it hosts Columbia College in a 1 p.m. contest.
