Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC Athletics Department, in conjunction with the UMKC Office of Student Affairs, unveiled plans to renovate the original Old Swinney Gymnasium, affectionately known as “Old Swinney”, which is part of the Swinney Recreation Center. The announcement took place on Sunday night at the annual UMKC Athletics Champion's Dinner at the Downtown Marriott. The renovation will transform the Old Swinney Gymnasium into a modern, collegiate practice facility that will better serve the student body, faculty and staff members and community members, as well as provide outstanding training opportunities for 'Roo student-athletes.
“In partnership with the Office of Student Affairs, led by Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Mel Tyler, we are very pleased to unveil the plans to renovate the Old Swinney Gymnasium,” said Director of Athletics Tim Hall. “This project will provide our basketball and volleyball programs with a first class practice facility that will be one of the best of its kind in The Summit League. In addition, the Old Swinney renovation will provide improved teaching and recreational opportunities to the entire UMKC campus community.”
The $500,000 renovation plan, of which 70 percent has already been pledged, calls for new basketball/volleyball court flooring and basketball standards and volleyball nets to be installed in the existing facility. The current skylights in the building will also be altered, which will allow for modified lighting to be put into place. The entire Old Swinney interior will be updated and scoreboards will be installed.
The Old Swinney Gymnasium renovation will be completely funded through private gifts and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2010.
“This is a big step forward for the Athletics Department as we continue to build championship-caliber programs within The Summit League,” Hall said. “In addition, the entire campus community will benefit from the improved playing surface and lighting within Old Swinney and the renovation will allow for increased court availability throughout the Swinney Recreation Center. I'm thrilled that our donors have so generously supported this project and thank Mel Tyler and the Office of Student Affairs for their collaboration on this important renovation.”
The Old Swinney Practice Facility renovation continues Hall's over arching goal of improving the UMKC Athletics facilities on a wider spectrum. In 2007, the men's and women's basketball and volleyball locker rooms, also located within the Swinney Recreation Center, were renovated. The transformation then continued in 2008 with the construction of the Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field, which officially opened in the fall of 2009.
