
UMKC Drops 60-58 Decision At IPFW

Fort Wayne, Ind. -- The UMKC women' s basketball team dropped its second straight Summit League match at IPFW on Monday night, 60-58. The Kangaroos fall to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Mastodons improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in The Summit League. Despite the loss, Dayon Hall-Jones led the `Roos with 16 points and LeAndrea Thomas contributed 11 points. Freshman Ashli Hill recorded a career-high eight blocks.
The Kangaroos and the Mastodons took turns with the lead in the opening minutes of the first half. A 12-0 run by IPFW in the middle minutes of the first half would give the Mastodons a commanding 14-point lead, 20-6, with ten minutes remaining.
The `Roos would begin chipping away at the `Dons lead with five minutes left in the first half, sparked by a pair of Hall-Jones free throws. Followed by four straight points from Simone Bridges to get UMKC within four, 24-20, with three minutes left in the half. IPFW was able to secure a few more points prior to the end of the first half, but the `Roos would go into the locker room down by four, 29-25.
IPFW would keep the lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The `Roos were finally able to tie the game and take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 8:26 following a Thomas jumper. The Kangaroos were unable to jump ahead by more than two, as the Mastodons would tie the game on each counter possession.
The Mastodons were able to string together a 7-0 run with five minutes left in the game to move ahead by four points, 57-53. A Hill jumper at 3:30 got UMKC within two, 59-57, and a Hall-Jones free throw would get the `Roos within one, 59-58, just 20 seconds later.
UMKC would have three looks at taking over the lead, following missed lay-ups and free throws by the Mastodons but couldn't capitalize on any of them. Things seemed down-and-out for the `Roos with IPFW looking to inbound the ball with 10 seconds left. But the UMKC defense shut them down, forcing `Dons head coach to use up three timeouts.
The Mastodons were finally able to get the ball in on the fourth try, forcing UMKC to foul to stop the clock. Amanda Hyde was able to sink one free throw, giving IPFW a 60-58 lead with nine seconds left in the game.
The Kangaroos put the ball in play and moved as quickly as possible down floor and would get a chance at a three but couldn't quite get it to fall, suffering their second Summit League loss.
Kim Nezianya brought down a season-high 11 rebounds.
The Kangaroos will take a break from Summit League play to take on Missouri on Dec. 11 at 12 p.m.
