As the newest member of the Kansas City women’s basketball coaching staff, assistant coach Shannon Baugh brings her basketball knowledge and experience as a former head coach and her familiarity with head coach Marsha Frese to the Kansas City program.
“With all that UMKC has to offer, coming to Kansas City was a no brainer,” Baugh said. “To work with Coach Frese is an incredible opportunity because of the type of coach and person she is and how she mentors the young people that cross her path. I am very grateful to her for giving me this tremendous opportunity to work for her and coach at UMKC. She has a great knowledge of the game and proven ability to motivate and mentor student athletes, which I am proud to be a part of.”
As a 15-year coaching veteran, Baugh joined the ‘Roos coaching staff after spending two seasons at North Illinois, including working alongside Frese during the 2011-12 season with the Huskies.
Before joining the NIU staff, Baugh served as the head coach at Saginaw Valley State, increasing the Cardinals win totals in each of her three seasons at the helm. As the only former head coach on the ‘Roos staff, Baugh brings invaluable experience and insight to the Kansas City women’s basketball program.
"We are so fortunate to have someone of Shannon's experience join our UMKC basketball family,” Frese said. “While her experience as a head coach and her over 14 years in the business will prove crucial to our team’s success, it is her positivity and her ability to connect with student-athletes that has me most excited. Shannon is hard working, detailed and has tremendous character. She has so much to offer, not only to our team but also to our staff, as we continue to learn from one another."
Prior to her time with the Cardinals, Baugh served as an assistant coach at Buffalo, Bradley, North Dakota, where she helped guide the Fighting Sioux to a 26-6 record in 2002-03, a North Central Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Semifinals, and Green Bay, where helped lead the 2001-02 Phoenix to a 24-7 record, Horizon League regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
“One of my most memorable coaching memories was when I was at Green Bay and we faced Texas in the NCAA tournament,” Baugh said. “We played them close the whole way and had a chance to win down the stretch.”
A 1994 graduate of Eastern Illinois, Baugh was a two-year letter winner for the Panthers and was named a team captain during the 1993-94 season. She led EIU in scoring (15.1) and rebounding (6.0) and her 129 free throws made still stand as a single season school record. Before finishing her collegiate career at EIU, Baugh earned NJCAA All-Region honors at Lincoln College in 1990-91, averaging 12.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
“I love being a part of this staff and program and being in Kansas City, there is so much to do and to see,” Baugh added. “My favorite spot is the top of the Student Union. The view from there is unbeatable.”
