Myleka Emerson enters her second season as a student manager with the UMKC women’s basketball program. Prior to being on the sidelines, Emerson played two seasons for the Kangaroos before suffering a career-ending injury during the 2007-08 season.
As a sophomore, Emerson appeared in 10 games for the Kangaroos, averaging 1.8 points, 0.9 rebounds and 8.2 minutes per contest. She scored a career-best nine points against Newman University on Jan. 2. As a freshman, Emerson compiled 71 minutes in 15 appearances.
Emerson played prep ball at El Cerrito High School in Oakland, Calif., averaging 14.1 points, 3.0 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.0 rebounds. She was twice named to the all-ACCAL first team and was also a San Francisco Chronicle all-Metro honorable mention selection in 2006.
Emerson led her high school team to four consecutive 20-win seasons and three sectional championship appearances. During her senior season, she led her team to a 25-6 overall record, culminating in a sectional championship win for the Lady Gauchos. Recognized for her achievements, Emerson was selected as the Most Valuable Player of both the Nike Tournament of Champions and the West Coast Jamboree during both the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
