KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Athletics has announced the hiring of John Barbee II as the department's Director of Game Operations. In a corresponding move, Kylee Nicolay, who spent the past two years as Director of Operations, will transition to a role as Co-Director of Athletic Communications.
"We are extremely fortunate to be able to provide an opportunity for Kylee in our communications department. I am confident she will excel in her new role," Deputy Director of Athletics for External Relations Curt Jacey said. "John will be a great addition to the external team and is ready to hit the ground running."
Barbee joins the Roos after spending the past year as a team manager of The Basketball League's Vegas Ballers. In the Director of Operations role, he will oversee game day setup, scheduling, facility oversight and serve as the liaison for athletics with many UMKC campus units.
"I've always wanted to serve in a high-level organization such as Kansas City Athletics," Barbee said. "Being able to work under well-known and hard-working individuals such as Curt Jacey and Dr. Brandon Martin was a perk that made this position that much more enticing to me. I'm also grateful to give back to a community that has already given so much to me."
Prior to his time in Las Vegas, Barbee attended and played basketball at Simpson College in Iowa. At Simpson, he majored in Sports Administration and was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year twice.
Born in Chicago, Ill., Barbee moved to Lawrence, Kan., where he graduated from Lawrence High School in 2015.Â
Barbee currently resides in Lawrence.
