UMKC Falls on the Road to Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – The Roos held early leads over the Wolverines but could not hold on as they fell 58-39 at Utah Valley on Thursday night.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.) put the Roos on the board with a layup. UVU hit a three to extend their lead to 8-2, before Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.) knocked down a three of her own to close the gap to 8-5. Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) hit a jumper in the final seconds of the first quarter to cut the UVU lead down to 10-7.
Back-to-back layups from Leikem and Moore gave the Roos their first lead of the night at 11-10 with 8:39 to left to play in the second quarter. UMKC took the lead again at 13-12 thanks to a layup from Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with 7:10 left in the quarter. UVU finished the quarter on a 14-2 run and led 27-15 at the half.
Aries Washington (Kansas City, Mo.) scored the first bucket of the second half to cut the lead to 27-17. Eight straight points from Waldron cut the Wolverine lead down to 28-25 with 7:00 left in the third quarter. UVU finished the quarter on a 16-2 run and led 44-27 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Roos were able to cut the lead to 14 in the fourth quarter, but could not get any closer as they fell 58-39.
Waldron led the team in scoring with 13 points. She also hauled in two rebounds and dished out an assist in the losing effort.
UMKC falls to 6-16 overall and 1-8 in the WAC, while Utah Valley improves to 7-16 overall and 2-6 in the WAC.
The Roos travel to Seattle U for a 6 p.m. CT tip-off on Saturday in another WAC contest.
