UMKC women's basketball dominated Seattle in the first half, outscoring the Redhawks 38-11 over the first 20 minutes, including 21-3 in the first quarter, propelling them to a 64-43 WAC win on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center.
Samantha Waldron led the 'Roos for the second straight game with 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from three-point range, with five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Kiana Law finished with 11 points, hitting 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 at the line, to go along with a team-high six rebounds, two steals and a block. Aries Washington and Taylor Leathers, meanwhile, each finished with 10 points and four rebounds with Washington notching three assists and Leathers two, while Ceidra Coleman stuffed the stat sheet with six points and career-high's of five rebounds, five assists and five steals, the most steals by a 'Roo this season.
First Meeting
Taylor Leathers finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Aries Washington chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds as UMKC women's basketball fell 62-53 to UTRGV on Jan. 16 at the Swinney Recreation Center. The 'Roos continued their hot shooting from the line, finishing a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, while outscoring the Vaqueros 20 to five off the bench with Sierra Bone accounting for eight and Kristen Moore for six.
The Coaches
Nationally known for her top-notch recruiting classes, Marsha Frese enters her fourth season as head women's basketball coach at UMKC. During her first three seasons in Kansas City, Frese began to establish her vision for a championship culture while guiding the 'Roos toward excellence, both on the court and in the classroom. Under Frese's guidance, the 'Roos have established a standard of excellence for classroom performance as UMKC earned top honors in back-to-back years with the highest team GPA in all of Division-I women's college basketball for both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
In second season with the program, Larry Tidwell earned Texas Association of Basketball Coach Division I Women's Basketball Coach of the Year honors by leading team to first winning season in 30 years at the NCAA Division I level and first since 1982-83 (10-5 as an NAIA Division II program), first postseason appearance (seventh seed in the West Bracket of the Women's Basketball Invitational) and first conference tournament championship game.
