(Kansas City, Mo.) – Taylor Leathers finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Aries Washington chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds as UMKC women's basketball fell 62-53 to UTRGV on Saturday afternoon at the Swinney Recreation Center.
“We did a good job keeping ourselves in the game, but we gave up too many second chance opportunities to a good rebounding UTRGV team which led to many of their baskets,” Head Coach Marsha Frese said. “We did a good of finding Taylor leathers tonight, who had the hot hand, but as a team, we need to have better recognition of whose hands the ball must touch, especially late game situations.”
The 'Roos continued their hot shooting from the line, finishing a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe, while outscoring the Vaqueros 20 to five off the bench with Sierra Bone accounting for eight and Kristen Moore for six.
The loss drops UMKC to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the WAC, while UTRGV improves to 12-7 on the year and 4-0 in the conference.
UTRGV opened the game with a 7-2 lead, but UMKC came storming back with a jumper from Kiana Law, two more from Leathers and a pair of free throws from Washington to go in front 10-7.
The Vaqueros would tie the game with a three, but the 'Roos closed the period on an 11-2 run, started by a three from Samantha Waldron and capped by baskets from Moore and Washington, to take a 21-12 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, UMKC maintained an eight point advantage three and half minutes in after Bone drilled a three, but UTRGV erased the deficit with an 17-7 rally to take a 33-31 lead into the break.
Coming out of the halftime, the 'Roos held close, trailing by just three over halfway into the period, but eight of the final 10 points went to the Vaqueros as UTRGV held a 49-40 lead after three quarters of play.
UMKC came out hot in the fourth, cutting the lead to three with field goals from Washington, Law and Leathers.
The lead would grow to just four at the 2:07 mark, but UMKC was unable to get any closer, falling 62-53
Law finished with six points and six rebounds.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Thursday when they head to Orem, Utah for a 6 p.m. matchup with Utah Valley.
