'Roo Women Knocked Out in Semifinals in Tight One, 4-3

(Kansas City, Mo.) - The UMKC women's tennis team saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Friday in the Summit League Tournament semifinals, falling to second-seeded IPFW by a 4-3 margin. The match was moved indoors to Woodside Country Club with the windy and rainy conditions.

The third-seeded Kangaroos (13-12) finished the season with a school record for wins, and became the first team to finish with a winning record since the 1991-92 team (8-6).

IPFW (18-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. UMKC was leading the No. 1 spot 6-5 but it went unfinished after the other two matches were completed.

The singles got started on the right foot for the 'Roos though, with Laura Bouet taking a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2. Suzan Lisenby gave the lead to UMKC with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5, while Eva Dalvai grabbed the No. 1 decision with a 6-4, 6-1 win. The Mastodons kept pace with UMKC at No. 3, as Raquel Vescovi took a 7-5, 6-3 win over Amelie Amsallem just about the same time as the No. 1 match ended.

IPFW came up with the final two matches in dramatic fashion though, capturing the No. 4 position in the third set as Caterina Kiefer won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Maddie Schulte. With the match tied 3-3, it came down to Jillian Yakominich at No. 6. She won the first set 6-3, but Alex Forsyth captured the match with the next two sets, 6-2, 6-1.
