Dan Lorenz, DPT, PT, LAT, CSCS is the rehabilitation consultant to the UMKC Roos. He is Kansas City’s only fellowship-trained physical therapist in sports medicine. Dan is the owner of Specialists in Sports and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (SSOR) in Overland Park, KS. Currently, he is also a rehabilitation consultant for Sporting Kansas City. He earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy with an Emphasis in Manual Therapy from the University of St. Augustine, FL in 2009 and has a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI in 2001, and a Bachelor of Health Sciences with an emphasis in Athletic Training from GVSU in 1999. In addition to being a licensed physical therapist (PT) and licensed athletic trainer (LAT), he is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, as well as a USA Weightlifting Level I Sports Performance Coach.
He completed the Duke University Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship from 2004-2005 where he focused on orthopedic and sports injuries, specifically for Division I athletes. Following the fellowship at Duke, he was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as an assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist in 2005, a position he held until after the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the Duke fellowship, he was an athletic trainer and physical therapist at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in 2004 in the weeks leading up to the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece. As an undergraduate, Dan completed an athletic training internship with the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball team.
Dan has presented at both the local, state, and national levels on topics related to sports and orthopedic physical therapy. As an active member of the Sports Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, he is Chair of the Sports Performance Enhancement Special Interest Group (SIG) and is the Editor-in-Chief of Home Study Courses for the Sports Section. He is also a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Dan has been published numerous times in peer-reviewed journals including Sports Health, International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, Strength and Conditioning Journal, Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and Physical Therapy Reviews, as well as numerous articles in trade journals such as Physical Therapy Products and Advance for Directors in Rehabilitation. He is a manuscript reviewer for Sports Health, Strength and Conditioning Journal, Physical Therapy Reviews, International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, and the Journal of Athletic Training. He has co-authored a chapter on posterolateral corner knee injuries, and has penned four home study courses on thermal modalities in rehabilitation, protective equipment/head/face injuries in sports, hematological concerns in the athlete, and therapeutic exercise application in rehabilitation.
