COLUMBIA, Mo. – Kansas City softball played in its first mid-week single game of the season, facing the number 24 ranked team in the nation, the Missouri Tigers. The Roos were overtaken by the Tigers explosive offense, falling in five innings by run-rule 11-0.
This marked the first time Kansas City has played a top-25 ranked team this season. The Tigers' bats have been hot all season and they continued that trend into today's game, totaling 10 hits to the Roos 5 hits. Senior Chyanne Onstad showed leadership, not backing down from the Tigers pitcher gathering two hits on the day. She doubled in the first inning and singled in the third inning to go 2-2 on the day. On the season, Onstad moves above Delainey Fenoglio on the team (players with +15 AB) to lead the team in batting average with a .359 average.
The Tigers of Missouri came into this game with the Roos ranked T-4th in home runs in the nation with 28. They utilized the long ball early, with the Tiger's leadoff batter going yard. Packard settled in to end the first inning with a strikeout and two groundouts. However, the Tigers struck with a couple more long balls in the game.
The Roos attempted a comeback in the third inning, loading the bases behind hits from Karnatz, Garcia, and Onstad, but couldn't bring them in. The freshman Karnatz showed poise all game, regardless of going against a top ranked team. She went 1-3 on the day and made a run-saving play in the second inning. She has started every game for the Roos at shortstop and is developing into a star every game.
The bottom of the third inning proved to be the difference for the Tigers, racking up 8 runs in the inning. The Roos couldn't climb back from the deficit, failing by a final score of 11-0. Sophomore Kailyn Packard, who is ranked second in wins in the WAC, received the loss and is now 4-7 on the season.
