KANSAS CITY, Mo.— This past week, Kansas City Athletics welcomed back Eric Smith, creator of the EKS Financial Literacy Coaching group, to campus to work with both student-athletes and staff on smart financial habits. Smith returned to the University for the third year in a row to continue to expand on content from previous visits. His impact and engaging discussions on financial literacy were expanded this year as he worked not only with the student-athletes, but with the staff and coaches as well.
Smith focused his student-athlete workshop on encouraging the students to explore and identify their spending priorities and creating their own monthly savings plan.
Senior woman's track & field student-athlete Marcya Spivey said "I enjoyed this presentation as I learned how to create a monthly budgeting plan and am going to give it a try over the next few months and see how much I can save."
Sophomore men's basketball player Demarius Pitts said, "the presentation with Eric was very informational and beneficial. Most of what he shared I had never learned before."
"We were excited to have Eric come back and work with our student-athletes and staff for another great presentation," said Amelia Howard, Assistant Director of Academic Support. "He was able to connect with and fully engage our students in reflecting on their own spending habits and priorities and gave them helpful tips to start investing while they are still in college.
"Furthermore, providing our student-athletes with skills to prepare for life after sports is a pillar in our department and our student-athlete development programming."
Smith also facilitated a retirement and investment workshop for the coaches and staff in attendance on Tuesday afternoon.
