KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- UMKC Athletics announced today the hiring of Chad Waller as the departments Athletic Communications Director.
Chad brings more than 14 years of strategic communication and marketing experience to the UMKC athletic staff. Chad spent 11 years as the Director of Athletics Communications and Media at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where he oversaw and coordinated all strategic communications and publicity efforts of 26 NAIA National Championship sports during the regular-season and all national championship events.
The breadth experience Chad brings to UMKC will allow him to solidly focus on key strategic priorities, including a redesign of the athletics website, solidifying relationships with key media members in the market, and elevating the Roo brand on the national stage.
“We are pleased to welcome Chad to the UMKC family” said Interim AD Ursula Gurney. “His ability to think through a strategic lens will assist UMKC Athletics as we enhance our brand, and develop cohesive and strong messaging to the campus and community.”
Prior to his time at the NAIA, Chad served as the Director of Sports Information at Northwest Missouri State, Assistant Sports Information Director at Bemidji State and Graduate Assistant SID at Minnesota State.
"I am very excited to get on campus and be a part of the UMKC family and lead the Athletic Communications Department efforts.” said Chad. “It is a great time to be involved with the administration and all athletic teams and see what the exciting future holds. My family and I are proud to be welcomed in the Roo community and I look forward to enhancing the University brand!"
Chad's primary functions as Athletic Communications Director are to research, develop, design, and execute complex and strategic communications, educational or media projects for the UMKC Athletic Department. He will have oversight of the athletic department's website, serve as the media relations contact for the department and all 16 sports, develop media relations strategies for the entire department and manage all game day elements as it relates to strategic communications. He will also work closely with UMKC Athletics Marketing Manager to promote the department through its social media channels.
