
'Roos Set to Open 2013 at KU's Bill Easton Classic

Along with the Kangaroos and Jayhawks, 13 other schools from across the Midwest will participate in Saturday's competition, as the festivities are set to begin at 1 p.m.
In the first meet of the season on Dec. 6, multiple 'Roos shined at KU's Bob Timmons Challenge, including junior Kris Leverette taking first in both the shot put (43-06.00 - 13.26m) and weight throw (57-07.50 - 17.56m) events. In the triple jump, meanwhile, senior D.C. Okonta won the event with a mark of 48-11.00 (14.91m), while freshman Eric Carter placed second (21-10.00 - 6.65m) in the long jump.
On the women's side, three athletes placed in the top five of the long jump, spearheaded by Michelle Momo's second place finish with a personal best mark of 18-05.75 (5.63m). Freshmen Sydia Darker (17-02.00 - 5.23m) and Patricia Miller (17-01.50 - 5.22m), meanwhile, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Also, sophomore Briana Carter and senior Stephany Johnson turned in top performances for the Kangaroos. In the triple jump, Carter placed first with a personal best mark of 39-02.25 (11.94m), while Johnson finished second (38-10.50 - 11.85m). Miller also placed fifth in this event with a mark of 38-02.00 (11.63m).
Rounding out the top outings for the women were sophomore Dahlia Dyson placing second in the weigh throw with a personal best mark of 55-02.75 (16.83m), followed by senior Susan Brueggemann finishing third (49.07.25 - 15.12m).
Next week, the Blue & Gold will return to Lawrence for the Jayhawk Challenge on Friday, Jan. 11, while some will compete in the Holiday Inn Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Lincoln, Neb.
