UMKC Cheer & Dance Attend Summer Camps

Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC cheer and dance squads attended various camps this past summer to prepare for the 2009-10 season. The cheer squad traveled to Springfield, Mo., for the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Cheer Camp, while the dance team attended the National Dance Association College Dance Camp in Lawrence, Kan., on July 28-30.
The Kangaroo cheer team attended the UCA camp along with junior college, Division I, Division II and Division I-A schools. Among those competing were the likes of Kansas, Missouri State, Wichita State and Missouri S&T. UMKC placed in four small coed camp categories. The team finished first in fight song and cheer and third in sideline. The 'Roos also earned the "Game-Planning Award".
The dance team, meanwhile, competed in the Team Dance Competition for a bid to Nationals. The 'Roos earned a bid to the national competition and the squad the only team in Division I-A to receive bid money towards their trip. Texas Tech, Kansas State and Iowa won the three full paid bids that were offered, and UMKC won a partial paid bid. The NDA College Dance Nationals will be held in April 2010.
Additionally, four members of the dance team - Asha Singh, Megan Stockman, Brittany Coughlin and Shanna Colbern - were selected as All-Americans. The camp also dished out three "Top Gun Awards". UMKC took home two of the honors with Megan Stockman earning the "Top Gun Leaps" award and Shanna Colbern receiving the "Top Gun Turns".
