Andy Nordland joined the UMKC track and field program in September 2009 as an assistant coach and is entering his fourth season as the throws coach for the `Roos. Nordland joined the program after spending four years at William Jewell College.
During his tenure, Norland has guided nine different student-athletes to marks in the top-five in UMKC history, including record broken by Kimoya Harriott (Javelin), Max Carroll (Javelin), Susan Brueggeman (Shot Put - outdoor) and Ramon Nelson (Shot Put - outdoor).
Nordland had four student-athletes record personal best marks that landed on UMKC's all-time top-five performance list following the 2009 indoor season.
During the 2009 outdoor season, Nordland watched Max Carroll break the UMKC school record in the javelin. Carroll also took the silver medal at The Summit League Outdoor Championship in the event. Nordland also coached Nick Stoppel to a fourth place finish at The League Championship in the javelin.
Under Nordland's watch, freshman Ramon Nelson scored 11 points for the men's team at The Summit League Outdoor Championship, finishing in the top-six in three events. Nelson earned the bronze medal in the shot put at the Championship. Nordland also coached Susan Brueggemann to a broken UMKC school record in the shot put, a feat she accomplished twice. Nordland had five student-athletes land on UMKC's all-time top-five performance list in eight events.
During his four years at William Jewell, Nordland coached student-athletes that won 14 individual Heart of American Athletic Conference champions. Additionally, nine school records were broken under his tutelage.
In the summer months, Nordland serves as the throws coach for the Falun Track and Field Club in Falun, Sweden, a position he has held for three years. Nordland worked with four-time Swedish National hammer throw Champion and former Boise State all-American Mattias Jons and Swedish Youth National shot put Champion Mats Olsson.
As a student-athlete, Nordland competed at Iowa State for four years, where he was a member of two Big Eight Championship teams as a shot put and discus thrower. Nordland also began his coaching career with the Cyclones, as he assisted with the numerous summer track and field clinics.
As a prep, Nordland competed at Clarinda High School where he was a two-time all-American, a AAU National Champion and was the Omaha World Herald’s Athlete of the Year. The two-time Drake Relays champion, also earned four all-class overall indoor and outdoor Iowa State Championships.
Nordland is a USATF Level 1 certified coach and a USATF Level 2 certified throwing events coach. He earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from Iowa State in 1990 and he recently earned his master’s in education from Rockhurst University in May 2009.
He and his wife Karla reside in Kansas City, Mo.
