Katie Bender is entering her first year as a graduate assistant coach with the UMKC softball program. Bender joins the 'Roos after providing private softball instruction in hitting, outfield and catching in Tampa, Fla., and Kansas City.
Bender joins the 'Roos after wrapping up her collegiate playing career at the University of Tampa.
Bender played collegiated at the University of Tampa, where she closed out her career as the school record holder leader in home runs, doubles, RBIs, hits and total bases. She also posted a .504 career slugging percentage during her playing career with the Spartans. Bender earned all-Sunshine State Conference honors during her time at Tampa, and she was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
As a prep, Bender attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where she was an all-Metro, all-Johnson County, all-Eastern Kansas League (EKL) and all-Sun County honoree. She also played competitive travel ball at the 18U Gold level and participated in ASA, NSA and AFA Nationals.
Bender, a native of Kansas City, Mo., graduated from the University of Tampa in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in sociology. She is currently in her second year in the master's of social work program at UMKC.
